- Safe Behaviour Against Lightning
Lightning is a very complex natural event with unpredictable consequences. It is one of nature’s most destructive phenomena and therefore poses a serious danger to people.
The map below shows real-time thunderstorms around the world.
You can scroll through it with the cursor and zoom in on specific regions.
The map clearly shows that some areas of the planet are more exposed to the danger of lightning.
Overall, the distribution of thunderstorms depends on the area, climate and time of year.
The map shows that most lightning strikes (about 70%) occur in the tropics where most thunderstorms occur. Some of the regions that are most exposed to the risk of lightning strikes are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, Malaysia, Indonesia, Colombia, Brazil, Cuba and Florida (in the United States), among others.
However, the risk of lightning strike when a thunderstorm strikes people outdoors is the same regardless of the region of the world they are in.
Understanding the phenomenon of lightning allows people to take individual preventive measures and protect themselves.
